Let’s be honest—wash day can totally feel like a whole event, especially when you’re trying to keep your hair healthy, fresh, and looking its best. So let'ts get into this Ultimate Hair Wash Day Guide! As a hairstylist, one of the most common questions I get is: “Am I washing my hair the right way?” And the truth is, it’s not just about shampoo and conditioner—it’s all in the how.
A good wash day routine sets the tone for everything: how your hair styles, how long your blowout lasts, and even how healthy it grows. So whether you’re trying to cut down on frizz, boost shine, or just show your hair some love, here are my top three go-to tips for wash day—straight from behind the chair.

1. Don’t Overdo It
Washing your hair every day? Let’s give your strands a little break. Washing too often can strip away your natural oils, which keep your hair soft, shiny, and balanced. For most hair types, 2–3 times a week is plenty. If your roots get a little oily in between, dry shampoo is your new BFF. A quick spritz and fluff, and you’re good to go.
2. Pre-Treat Before You Shampoo
This is one of my favorite little hair secrets. If your ends feel dry or you’re dealing with damage, apply a lightweight oil or deep conditioner before you even step in the shower. Let it soak in for 15–30 minutes—it acts like a protective barrier and gives your hair a hydration boost before you even start shampooing. Think of it as a mini spa moment for your strands.
3. Focus Shampoo on Your Scalp
Here’s where technique really matters. Your scalp is where oil, dirt, and product build up, so that’s where you want to concentrate your shampoo. Give your scalp a nice, gentle massage with your fingertips (not your nails!) to cleanse and stimulate circulation. Your ends don’t need to be scrubbed—let the suds rinse through them instead to keep them soft and healthy.
